15-year-old convicted of all counts
A Mississippi 15-year-old has been sentenced to life in prison for killing her mother and shooting her stepfather. After two hours of deliberations, the jury found Carly Gregg guilty on all counts. Gregg was charged with murder and aggravated assault in the March 19 shooting that killed her mother, Ashley Smylie, and wounded her stepfather, Heath Smylie. She was also charged with tampering with evidence for hiding a security camera after the shooting. The jury was given the option of finding Gregg guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity. "Long week, sad day. Carly Gregg is evil. That's not easy to say, but the truth of the matter is sometimes evil comes in young packages, small packages — and this is one of those cases," said Bubba Bramlett, district attorney for Rankin and Madison counties. "She's fixing to go to prison for the rest of her life. You hate that; she's 15 years old, but that's exactly where she belongs."Defense attorney Kevin Camp told the jury that it has all been extremely hard on Gregg's family and asked them not to make it worse by sentencing Gregg to a life behind bars. Gregg was crying throughout the reading of the verdict. Heath Smylie and Gregg's grandparents were in the courtroom when the verdict was read, and they appeared to be mouthing words of encouragement to her.Gregg was also given a life sentence for shooting her stepfather and 10 years in prison for tampering with evidence. Attorneys said she was not given the opportunity for parole. "She's doing OK, she's hanging in there," Camp said after the sentence. "This was a tough case from the get-go. This jury had a very, very tough decision to make." Gregg's attorneys said they plan to appeal.
