Critics Consensus

Despite Dakota Johnson's best efforts, the chaotically anachronistic Persuasion fails to convince as a worthwhile Austen adaptation.

Whether you're annoyed or entertained by its modern touches, Persuasion definitely isn't your grandmother's Austen adaptation.

Feb 6, 2024 Full Review Persuasion | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Tom Shone Times (UK) There’s nothing wrong with updating Austen, but this isn’t so much updating the book as performing a gut renovation. Jul 29, 2022 Full Review Persuasion | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Daniel Allen Loud and Clear Reviews Austen has been refashioned before. But Persuasion wants both worlds – the updated story and the historical setting. However, not only does this modern edge not gel with the original novel, but it leads to a questionable tone. R C Atrocious. If you love Austen give it a miss, spare yourself from this travesty. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Sarah M This movie has become one of my favorite movies to watch. I don’t understand the bad reviews, maybe it might not be your taste but other people may enjoy it. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Lynn H I had heard so many bad things about this version but I loved it! There's so much to pick apart but the one thing I'll say is that this is the first time I've seen chemistry between the leads. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review Stephanie L Ahead of it's time, this is that film which makes fools of its reviewers quickest off the mark. Granted it is a jarring first watch, especially for Austen-genre enthusiasts. Its fourth-wall-breaking, modernised dialogue, and playful actor interpretations are unexpected (an unforgivable quality for Austenites). However, what could be more Austen than direct internal dialogue, sharp-witted social observation, and painful self-awareness? By going against the established rules of Austenhood, it is in some ways more Austen than them all. Dakota Johnson is divine as the hopelessly-herself Anne, playing the physical comedy and wry delivery with such natural subtlety you miss it the first time looking for something more comfortable. Cosmo Jarvis is an utterly believable Wentworth. While equal to Anne's quick wit, he plays the pain of love masked as stoic resentment perfectly. The wider cast are all so entertaining, filling in the character landscape with eccentrics, hopeless romantics, selfish narcissists, their long-suffering relations...all as it should be within the Austen universe. Considering the novel's own faltering journey into broad appreciation, it seems apt that a film adaptation would start out so unfairly underappreciated. Watch it again, I dare you. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Audience Member I have seen many Jane Austen adaptations of her many book and I have to say that this adaptation is by far the worst I've seen. It felt much too modern with poor acting from Dakota Johnson and her constant fourth-wall breaks. I just feel that she is not well suited for a period piece, but that's just personal opinion. Will definitely be sticking with the older adaptations . Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Miroslava M It's horrible what they did to Anne's character. What they did in this 'adaptation' seems like a crime to me. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
